I put out the Jo, My Gosh! bat signal and asked for military spouses to offer their salient advice for new military brides. What would they say to them if they could? So many people responded with great insight, ideas, and advice!

This advice is so sweet for military brides! :-)

Planning the wedding

“My best advice to military brides is to look into wedding insurance, it’s not a huge fee, but if your wedding needs to be adjusted due to military orders you will be able to recoup many of your deposits!” -Love the Everyday, Army spouse

“Go with the flow and keep it simple. I know so many people who spent so much time and money that they didn’t even enjoy their day. You don’t want to begin a marriage stressed and in debt over a party. Also, you can’t make everyone happy. Ultimately, it’s your day and sometimes it’s okay to put yourself and your partner first.” -Melissa, Army spouse

You don’t have to spend $$$$ to have a memorable day!” -Briana, Air Force spouse

“My advice is to let go of the idea of a “perfect” wedding and everything will work out. I would have been content to elope, but my husband wanted a ‘real wedding’. But I tried very hard not to be a bridezilla, and to be very appreciative of the wedding we were able to have and of how well everything fell into place. Also, PS, off-season weddings are way easier to plan and also less expensive.”-Emily, Air Force spouse

“At least have photos of your day, it’s nice to look back, since there are so many couples who have hurried weddings.” -Ashley, Air Force spouse

“My advice to a hurried bride would be to slow down, breathe, and think about what is truly important. Plan your wedding like it will be your only [one] and make sure you have the people that mean the most to you there, because that’s what you’re going to remember when you look back on that day. Just because it may be rushed doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful in its own simple way and just because you love your fiance and can’t wait to be with him for the rest of your life doesn’t mean you should forget to share such a wonderful moment with the rest of the people you hold dear to your heart.” -Michaela, Air Force spouse

Keep calm and get married

“It’s your wedding to your husband. It doesn’t matter where or when or who is there. What makes it perfect is the person you are making these vows to. That makes everything that goes wrong, all the imperfections perfect. I love our day because it was ours!” -Brittany, Navy spouse

“My advise is to just roll with it, breathe with the things that crop up. In the end, the most important thing isn’t the wedding date or what went right or wrong, but that you pledge yourself formally to your love and committed to each other in marriage for the rest of your lives.” -Marlaina, Army spouse

“My advice would be to follow your heart. No decision is wrong if you are happy and love each other. People judge too much and we just ignored it because we are happy together. Anyways those people probably aren’t any that you want to be around if they are that negative.” -Shannon, Marine spouse

“My advice? Screw it! You can always re-do it later. And the wedding is just a day. The marriage is what is important.” -Felicitas, Navy spouse and active duty member

Advice from milspouses for new military brides-- wedding planning, dealing with the military, etc.

What matters most

“You are marring each other because you love each other and want to spend the rest of your life together. Also you can always have vow renewal and make that day perfect.” -Keely, Army spouse

“Just remember in the end what matters. In the end we knew we wanted to be married. It didn’t matter how, we just wanted to be married and be together. We got everything we wanted.” -Lynn, Air Force spouse

“Enjoy your day, it will be special no matter what. The more that goes wrong, the more you will have to look back and laugh at in 5 years.” Dannielle, Air Force spouse

Marrying into the military lifestyle

“My advice for future military wives is always remember ‘hurry up and wait,’ plus don’t plan anything ahead of time!” -Ashley, Marine spouse

“If your marriage starts out unexpected because of something with the military, it’s only preparing you for your time as a milspouse, lol. Get used to it.” -Nahtana, Air Force spouse

“Learn to roll with whatever the military throws at you. You are about to get on Space Mountain. You know its a roller coaster but you can’t see the loops until you are already in them. Sit back, enjoy the ride and feel free to scream sometimes (it really does help). Also don’t forget that there are others who are on the ride with you that will be willing to hold your hand or scream with you.”-Kelly, Marine spouse
