How to Make a Welcome Home Beer Cake for Homecoming

Often, I receive emails and comments asking for suggestions for deployment and homecoming gifts. When John came home from Afghanistan, I didn’t even think of a homecoming present. The only real thing I brought him was a giant piece of cake from my bridal shower (which had happened the night before).

And then I received a really cool email from Colleen, the lovely milspouse who’s care packages with her kids inspired 16 Easy Kid-Friendly Care Package Crafts. This time she’s created something not-so-kid-friendly (spoiler alert: it’s a beer cake!). When she sent me a picture of it, I swooned… not because I love beer (I can’t stand it!) but because John would have loved this when he came home from deployment had I been inventive enough to come up with it!

So take it away, Colleen!

My husband recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan, and I made him a beer cake to welcome him home. Since he had not had any alcohol in over six months, he was very excited to see this!

Step 1

Find a strong base that can support a decent amount of weight. I used a serving platter with edges to prevent the beer bottles from slipping off.

Step 2

Find a circular container. It must be sturdy enough to support beer bottles placed on top of it. I used a quart container from our local ice cream place (lots of ice cream is usually consumed during a deployment, so it works out!).

Step 3

Surround the circular container with beer bottles. Make sure the labels are facing out. Secure together by wrapping scotch tape around the whole thing a of couple times. Cover the scotch tape with a decorative ribbon.

Step 4

Depending on the size of your circular container, create a second layer by doing the same as step three. The bottles should be placed on the circular container, not on the first layer of beer bottles (The second layer should be inset of the bottom layer).

Step 5

Place one beer bottle as the top layer of the beer cake by wedging it inside of the middle layer. It’s very important for the middle layer to be secured properly, in order to support the top beer bottle.

Step 6

Decorate the beer cake with flags and a decorative ribbon. I found cute star-shaped chalkboards at AC Moore, which was perfect to write “Welcome Home.”

Step 7

Wait for your loved one to return home and promptly dismantle the beer cake!

If you’ve ever made or given a homecoming gift, what was it? I can’t wait to hear all about it in the comments!
