Expecting and New Military Moms Should Know This About TRICARE Coverage

This is a sponsored post by Aeroflow. All opinions are my own.

If you’re new to the military (or let’s be honest, even if you’re not), TRICARE can be a little confusing. And by a little, I mean a lot. Sometimes it seems like the rules and procedures change from base clinic to base clinic… or that things you thought were covered actually aren’t… or that the kind of coverage you need suddenly becomes a lot harder to get.

And when you need something in particular, you don’t want to have to dig around and figure out what’s what. (Because that is awful.)

So today, let’s break down TRICARE coverage for expecting and new moms. (Because there are some really great perks you should know about!)

Information about breastfeeding and TRICARE coverage-- don't miss. #military #milspouse #pregnant #pregnancy #ad

TRICARE covers breast pumps and supplies for new mothers–including those who have adopted and are planning to breastfeed. (And by the way, if you bought a breast pump on your own, they are retroactively reimburseable from December 19, 2014. Here’s how to submit a claim.)

These are the pumps that are covered:

  • Hospital-grade
  • Manual breast pump
  • Standard electric breast pump

And these supplies are covered for 36 months after birth:

  • Standard power adapters
  • Tubing and tubing adaptors
  • Locking rings
  • Bottles and bottle caps
  • Shield/splash protectors
  • Storage bags

(You can read more directly from the TRICARE website right here.)

Buuuuut… if you haven’t already bought a breast pump, there are really only two options if you want to get one at no-cost to you:

  • You can order it on your own, submit receipts and paperwork, and get a reimbursement
  • You can order it through a company that takes care of all of the receipts and paperwork, so you never shell out a dime

(And I don’t know about you, but when it comes to anything, I always opt for the less stressful way out.)

If you google TRICARE and breast pumps, you’ll quickly see that there are a bunch of different companies that handle this part of health care. The question really becomes, how do you choose one?

Let me introduce you to Aeroflow Breastpumps

This pump provider works directly with TRICARE so that you never have to pay out for a TRICARE-covered one. (And they also take care of all the paperwork, so you can nest, cuddle your new baby, or–who am I kidding? You’re probably going to be PCSing with one hand and saying goodbye to your partner with the other. We all know that’s how this goes.)

Regardless of what you’ll do with that extra time, Aeroflow Breastpumps wants to make sure that it’s super easy for you. Here’s their basic process:

Like I said, easy.

And if you aren’t a TRICARE beneficiary, Aeroflow works with five other health insurers (Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana), thanks to the Affordable Care Act’s (known also as Obamacare) provision for breastfeeding coverage.

(But wait, Aeroflow offers a military discount too. But we’ll get to that in a minute.)

Did someone say help?

Maybe you don’t know which brand to get, or maybe you’re just overwhelmed. If you find yourself in that position, you can speak to an Aeroflow specialist is there to walk you through the whole process–including helping you decide the right pump and supplies for you.

Here’s what your specialist will do, from start to finish:

  • Make sure that you’re eligible for a pump through your insurance
  • Contact your physician for a prescription if you don’t already have one
  • Understand your lifestyle and breastfeeding goals so that they can match you up with the right pump for you
  • Recommend supplies and accessories that make sense for your lifestyle and the pump you’re receiving
  • Figuring out which supplies also qualify under your insurance plan
  • Take care of all of the billing
  • Ship your pump and supplies to you (and without shipping charges either)

(And remember, if you’re on TRICARE, you already know that your breastpump and supplies are covered with a prescription.)

If you’re ready to get started ordering, the first step you need to take is to complete your online qualification form.

So about that military discount

Aeroflow not only offers a variety of name brand breast pumps and supplies, but they also have maternity and breastfeeding apparel and accessories available. And, to thank military families for their service and sacrifice, they offer a 15% store-wide discount for active, Reserve, and retired service members.

And talking about accessories, in honor of Mother’s Day, Military Appreciation Month, and Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Aeroflow is giving one Jo, My Gosh! reader their choice of the Sarah Wells Greige breast pump bag or the Sarah Wells’ Kelly breast pump bag, which is uniform-compliant and meets military standards.

Here’s what the Greige bag looks like:

  1. Bottles and bottle caps. I did not know that. Too bad I have already purchased all my bottles.

  2. Trucage also covers power adapters, storage bags, parts, etc for 36 months

  3. I tried to get my breast pump reimbursed, but they wanted a prescription for it! I had my baby overseas, where everything is electronic and they couldn’t produce a prescription, so I’m out of luck. If there’s a way to go through a company that deals with Tricare directly, that’s the best way to go.
