Every so often, I get to collaborate with a company that truly blows me away. Sseko Designs is one of those companies. I’ve become an ardent–no, rabid– purchaser of their products (and no, I’m not paid to say any of this). (Seriously, their shoes fit my big, difficult-to-size feet beautifully… and comfortably.) More than anything, I love what they stand for: dreams, dignity, and fairness.

Sseko was created by a young, female entrepreneur who wanted to help Ugandan women earn the money they needed for university. They had already been accepted, but there were no jobs available for them to work to earn enough to attend college. Liz stepped in, creating a fair trade business that teaches women skills, pays them fairly, and helps them to achieve their education and their career dreams.  (You can read the whole story here. It’s fascinating.)

And now they want to help military spouses in America, too.

Why military spouses?

Sseko is a different kind of direct sales business. With products that are ethically made, fair trade, and actually positively impact the lives of women in Uganda, Sseko cares about the people who make, sell, and buy their products.

And to be really honest? Direct sales businesses are a big thing in the military community for obvious reasons. It’s a job that you can actually take with you no matter where you go. It’s flexible to meet the demands of your family and your spouse’s military service. It gets you out and about… and with the internet, you can literally work from and sell to anywhere.

And that sounds really great for military spouses who have been burnt by PCSes and the military’s schedule time and time again.

Direct sales aren’t right for everyone. That’s okay. If it’s not right for you, no worries.

But if it’s something you’ve been thinking about… consider this: Sseko hasn’t made a splash in the military community yet. You’ll find very few Sseko Fellows right now who are military spouses… which means that as one of the first milspouse Sseko Fellows, you’ll have a much broader client base in your area and online.
