The back to school season means a lot of things: New supplies, new faces, new teachers, and new subjects. For military kids, chances are, it means a new school too. And then there are all of those pre-tests and diagnostics to see where students are lacking skills and knowledge.
For students and parents (and teachers, too!) it’s a busy time that can feel more than a little intimidating. Kids worry that they won’t have the right scores or won’t make friends. Parents worry about their child’s abilities, the expenses that come with a new year, and making sure they meet all of the handout and form deadlines. (And teachers worry about pretty much everything. Trust me… I used to have nightmares for a week before school started!)
Especially for military families who may PCS in the middle of a school year or miss a physical, some things can get accidentally overlooked. That’s why Shriners Hospitals for Children has created an app to help make scoliosis checks a little easier and top-of-mind.

 Why it’s important

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that often manifests in children. Kids should have an annual scoliosis screening, but it can often fall by the wayside when changing schools or moving around a lot. There’s often no known cause for the condition, which makes exams and early detection so important for catching and correcting.

The app

SpineScreen was designed by Shriners Hospitals for Children doctors to help in early detection of curved spines. You simply turn the app on and move the phone against the child’s back. The program can detect abnormal curves in the spine and is a free and quick way to monitor spine curvature.

Of course, it’s an app, which means that it can’t definitively diagnose scoliosis. But it can tell you if something is abnormal and if your child should see a doctor.

SpineScreen is a multi-functional tool and can also teach you and your child about the signs of scoliosis and treatment options and provide a calendar for annual screening reminders. Find out more about the app and scoliosis here.
