I love when businesses are more than businesses. The magic happens when they’re centers of community. Whether it’s because of its cozy feel, the way team members make customers feel, or the initiatives they spearhead, there’s something magnetic about a business that cares about its local area.
When John was serving in the Navy in Virginia, our local Navy Federal Credit Union was one such place. Whenever we walked into the building, there was always something happening. It might have been free cookies one day and a food drive another. Sometimes it was Navy Federal promotions, complete with streamers, balloons, and posters. One staple that never failed? Their Toys for Tots drive.
You probably know exactly what I’m talking about because your local Navy Federal branch likely collects toys for Toys for Tots, too. You know it’s the holiday season when the red and white cardboard collection boxes are displayed prominently at the beginning of November, and by December are overflowing with gifts for children.
Here’s what you should know about this fantastic way to give back to your community:
Here’s how to give back
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has been a staple of Navy Federal Credit Union’s holiday giving for over 25 years. While Navy Federal participates in many worthy, military-connected causes year-round, this one is extra special because it takes place during the holiday season.
Last year, you helped Navy Federal donate more than 20,600 toys to children in need through the Toys for Tots program. This year, Navy Federal is encouraging their communities to rally around their local children by dropping off a new, unwrapped toy at a Navy Federal branch until December 4— there are 250+ locations participating this year!
If you’re looking to donate online, or if you’re unsure where to donate physical toys, head to Navy Federal Credit Union’s site for the most up-to-date information.
What is the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program?
The goal of Toys for Tots is to bring Christmas joy and hope by collecting and distributing new and unwrapped to needy children during the holiday season. While collection, sorting, and fundraising efforts happen year-round, Toys for Tots has a nationwide toy drive that happens throughout the holiday season.
During the holiday season, Toys for Tots coordinators work with local welfare and community agencies to make sure the toys get into the right children’s hands.
For more than 20 years, Toys for Tots has been ranked as a top-rated charity through Philanthropy 400.
Toys for Tots deadlines and reminders
Christmas is approaching quickly but there’s still time for you to participate and the need is still great!
While there are hundreds of Navy Federal branches all over the world, it’s possible that you don’t live close to a physical location. That’s okay! You can still participate.
If you do have a participating Navy Federal branch near your home, you can drop off unwrapped, new toys in any Toys for Tots collection bin at the branch. From there, your generous gift will be sorted by gender and age, and then distributed to children who need a brighter, more joyful, and more hopeful holiday.
